Emotional Contagion and CCH's, Op Pro by Dup

The other day I heard the expression 'Emotional Contagion' so started looking into it out of curiosity. Good stuff.

According to Wikipedia:

Quote:

Emotional contagion is the phenomenon of having one person's emotions and related behaviors directly trigger similar emotions and behaviors in other people. One view developed by Elaine Hatfield et al. is that this can be done through automatic mimicry and synchronization of one's expressions, vocalizations, postures and movements with those of another person.[1] When people unconsciously mirror their companions' expressions of emotion, they come to feel reflections of those companions' emotions.[1] Emotions can be shared across individuals in many different ways both implicitly or explicitly. For instance, conscious reasoning, analysis and imagination have all been found to contribute to the phenomenon.[1]

Remember when we did CCH's, mimicking each other's hand motions and stuff until it was easy and we could do it without thinking?

Nothing 'OT' about it. Emotional contagion is an actual phenomenon and it uses mimicry and other methods to obtain agreement.

Hatfield was a pioneer in Social Psychology since the early 60s. Her focus was mainly emotions. Not long ago, the Huffington Post ran an interesting article about Dr. Hatfield's studies on the Psychology of Hate. http://ift.tt/298ZjxU

Gerald Schoenewolf took her studies a lot further. His study:
Quote:

  • Discusses emotional contagion, a process in which a person or group influences the behavior of another person or group through the conscious or unconscious induction of emotional states and behavioral attitudes. Examples of emotional contagion can be found in cases of witchcraft and in everyday life. The history of the concept is reviewed, and a case example involving therapy with a borderline patient is presented. A theory of emotional contagion is also discussed.

Sounds just like Scientology and brainwashing! But it gets even better.

After Schoenewolf, Sigal G Barsade from Yale University picked up the studies and took it further. He called it, 'The Ripple Effect: Emotional Contagion and Its Influence on
Group Behavior.' A full PDF copy of his study is available for free download on the Internet.

Barsade focused not only on emotional contagion, but cognitive contagion - how group members share ideas and ways of thinking. Loosely, brainwashing, since the contagion caused automatic responses that were well below the person's awareness.

In Barsade's study, he states:

Quote:

First, the transfer of ideas is qualitatively different from the transfer of feelings. Words are
central to understanding ideas yet are least important in understanding emotions, for which nonverbal cues are primary
(Mehrabian, 1972). Because of the importance of these nonverbal cues, direct interpersonal contact is important for
the transmission of emotions in groups. Conversely, sharing cognitions need not occur face to face
It's a long study and gets pretty technical in parts, but he breaks down the 'Ripple Effect' in detail. Contagion of negative moods is just as fast as positive moods and vice-versa. Energy of the speaker, eye contact and other non-verbal cues were discussed. Although the study began with a goal of increasing productivity, the ramifications for controlling others through non-verbal and other cues, from emotion to thinking was clear.

Success Stories. Lol! Just another vehicle for emotional and cognitive contagion. Like CCH's, like Op Pro by Dup, like so many of the other controls and hypnotic cues we experienced in Scientology.
