A Melbourne-based financial planning group targeted by the regulator in a landmark court case used the teachings of Church of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard as part of its staff training, a former employee has claimed.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) last week filed civil action against NSG Services, formerly trading as National Sterling Group. ASIC alleges the firm failed to properly train its staff and acted in a way that was not in its clients best interests, including pushing unnecessary life insurance products.

"The facilitator told us the training was based on the teachings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard but that the business wasn't associated with Scientology, it just liked the philosophy," said former National Sterling trainee Dylan Romano.
